Family values shape everything we do at Tingey Injury Law Firm. In this article, we’ll look back at Don C. Tingey’s journey to establish Tingey Injury Law Firm and the role that family has played along the way.
As a law student at George Washington University, Don C. Tingey was busy juggling the rigors of law school and the needs of his growing family. Seven of Tingey’s 12 children were born before he graduated from law school, so finances were tight. He drew on the work ethic he had learned growing up on a farm in Utah and took on side jobs to make ends meet.
In one job at a local insurance claims office in Washington D.C., he found himself working against the attorneys of injury accident victims. He developed an empathy for these victims, many of whom found themselves in dire financial and physical straits due to accidents that were not their fault.
As graduation neared, Tingey was drawn to his roots in the West. He visited law school colleagues who had settled in Las Vegas, including Harry Reid, who would go on to become a U.S. Senator from Nevada. Tingey was hired for a law firm in Las Vegas and, in 1967, moved his family across the nation. The dry air and desert beauty drew Tingey in, and it soon became his home. After several years, Tingey established his own law firm, which eventually was named Tingey Injury Law Firm. If you visit Tingey’s office today, you can see a vestige of his early days in law through a 1970 black and white photo of the Clark County Bar Association members. Tingey is pictured alongside other respected attorneys who blazed early trails in the Vegas legal community.
A Family Business
Las Vegas was on the cusp of a population explosion, and Tingey soon found his practice growing to accommodate injured Las Vegas residents in need of an effective advocate. Tingey became well-known for cutting through the underhanded tactics of Big Insurance, and he was also in touch with the best medical practitioners in Las Vegas, which allowed him to connect clients with the most competent care.
As Tingey’s clients benefited from his skill with the law, so, too, did his sons, who were drawing inspiration from their father and cultivating their own interests in legal practice. Tingey’s son Bruce D. Tingey earned his Juris Doctorate from California Western School of Law and joined the firm in 1993. He brought his special expertise to the firm with his strong background as a worker’s compensation and car accident lawyer. He is regarded as an unparalleled litigator in the Las Vegas legal community. Dean M. Tingey followed in the footsteps of his father and brother, also attending law school. He earned his Juris Doctorate from Gonzaga and joined the firm in 1998, bringing extensive experience with car and trucking accidents. Don and his two sons are members of the Clark County Bar Association and the Nevada Justice Association.
In 2006, Don Tingey received the Nevada Trial Lawyer Association’s Badger Award for going “above and beyond the call of duty.” He was also honored with the 2017 Nevada Justice Association Lifetime Achievement Award. But Tingey said that he is most proud of the work he has done to help people rebuild their lives and sense of hope in the wake of injury accidents.
“I think we’ve helped everybody that we have represented over the last five decades in a very tangible way,” said Tingey. “It’s been honest work – hard work – working for our clients.”
Don Tingey still comes into work every day, just as he has for the past 51 years, and when he’s not in the office, you’ll likely find him spending time with his family, which has grown to include 56 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren.
From our Family to Yours
Clients often comment on the family “feel” at Tingey Injury Law Firm, and that is by design, according to Don Tingey. “We’re not attorneys up on a high perch who can’t relate to our clients. We’re brothers and sons, fathers and grandfathers. We’ve had ups and downs in life just like our clients. This is a family business, and we view our clients as part of that family.”
Given the interconnectedness of families, personal injuries can ripple out quickly and deeply. Consider a young child who was injured by a dog bite or a college student who was hit by a car while biking to school. The physical challenges, worries and expenses could reverberate for years to come. Consider, as well, a father or mother who has been injured in a vehicle accident or a slip-and-fall accident at work, rendering them unable to provide for the family or care for the kids in their usual way. Or in the case of a beloved grandparent who is a victim of nursing home abuse or neglect, the victim’s pain and suffering, as well as the emotional burden felt by extended family members, can be devastating.
Compounding this is the stress of the legal paperwork with its attendant deadlines and Big Insurance trying to downplay your injuries or pressure you into a lowball settlement. They are pros at this, but you are likely facing a major injury accident for the first time and don’t know how to navigate it all.
We have the knowledge and experience to shoulder these stresses for you and help you reach the best possible outcome. We understand the importance of relieving you and your loved ones from the physical and financial burdens you are facing so that you can move forward positively.
