Qualities to Look for in a Trusted Lawyer
Like finding a great doctor, acquiring a trusted attorney can be a process of trial and error — but it doesn’t have to be tedious work. Knowing what qualities you want in a lawyer will help you recognize a great one when you find him or her. And we know what qualities make great lawyers — because those are the only kind we associate with.
Research Skills – In order to formulate a legal strategy, attorneys must do a great deal of research. That being said, you should make sure your lawyer has the skills necessary to thoroughly research your case and determine the best strategy.
Writing Skills – We may live in an era of telephones, but paper and pens are still alive and well in the legal world. In order to communicate effectively, your attorney needs superior writing skills — so try exchanging a few emails!
Analytical Skills – This one’s a no-brainer. Attorneys need to thoroughly analyze large amounts of facts, circumstances, evidence, etc. Making sure that your attorney won’t overlook an important fact is crucial.
Eloquence – They’re not running for office, but your attorney still needs to sound confident and educated when speaking. Since he or she is representing you, you’ll want to make sure your best face — and voice — is forward.
Creativity – It may sound strange, but in order to find you the best solutions possible, attorneys need to sometimes think outside the box. That said, a good dose of creativity is vital in any trusted attorney.
Education – Of course, you’d never choose a lawyer who hadn’t graduated from law school and passed the Bar Exam. But good attorneys should constantly be learning and pursuing continuing education. This helps ensure that your trusted advisor is up-to-speed on current legislation, regulations, etc.
